Brits seek sun as dreadful summer continues
August 30, 2009
The fall of the pound against the euro, the increasing cost of a holiday abroad, more checks at the airport, recession and concerns over employment and the prospect of a good summer meant many holidaymakers declaring their intention to holiday in this country in an effort to reduce costs. Greece and Spain were predicted to take the brunt of the stay at home Brit.
The Uk travel industry was jubilant at the idea of busy hotels and guesthouses with seaside and rural businesses, seeing more traffic. This was going to be the year when the tide turned for the British travel economy with the Brits refusing to travel to European countries. Steadily over the last 30 years the Brits have religiously travelled abroad with Spain, France, Greece and Turkey the most popular destinations.
One thing, which is predictable about the English weather, is its unpredictability and all the noises about what a tremendous summer we could expect is already in ruins. The summer has been nothing short of a catastrophy with rain and more rain making this one of the worst summers on record. Campsites have been turned into lakes with flooding widespread in the south and southwest. Whilst temperatures haven’t been to bad there is little fun sitting on a beech under a steady drizzle or an almighty downpour.
The weather has certainly put paid to the Staycationers who have returned to type with demand for holidays abroad picking up as travellers look to guarantee a sunshine break. Because of the poor start to the year the price of holidays abroad are still relatively cheap and if you are looking for a cheap holiday be sure to book your Airport Parking Gatwick, Heathrow parking and Manchester airport car parking as early as possible to secure the widest choice of car parks and hotels.
